Our founding fathers understood this about human nature. Given great power, people will, by nature, begin to outwardly express (to the fullest extent by which they are allowed to express it) the corruption that is already in their hearts.

(This is absolutely why we need the grace and restraining power of the Holy Spirit. Human beings are capable of anything, and we could and would do unimaginably evil things if God allowed us to. The video in the below article is disturbing. But I implore you, please, watch it. We here in America widely forget that governments (which are made up of corrupt human beings) WILL become tyrannical. It's not a question of "if" but "when."

Give them power, and they will not easily give it back. Let them take your rights, they will not easily give them back. Because their very nature lusts to worship the things that are irresistible to them (power, authority, control, manipulation, wealth), and when given the opportunity, they will do anything required, even oppressing people, even destroying people, in order to attain the idols they so highly covet.
